Antoine Griezmann has revealed that his enduring childhood passion for football is the driving force behind his performances as Atlético Madrid prepare to host Barcelona in a crucial La Liga encounter this Sunday.
The French forward, who has netted 11 goals in 26 league appearances this season, spoke candidly about his motivation. “The passion I had as a child, that feeling of just wanting to play football, is what still moves me today,” Griezmann stated. “I try to keep that same spirit, to enjoy myself on the pitch, and to give my all for this club.”
This fixture carries significant weight in the race for a top-four finish. Atlético currently sit in fourth place with 58 points, while Barcelona are just ahead in second with 70 points. A positive result at the Metropolitano is vital for Diego Simeone’s side to solidify their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes.
Griezmann’s history with Barcelona adds a compelling layer to the clash. The 32-year-old spent two seasons at Camp Nou between 2019 and 2021 before returning to Atlético, initially on loan. His knowledge of their style and players could prove invaluable. “Facing Barcelona is always special,” he acknowledged. “They are a great team with incredible players. We know it will be a very difficult match, but we are at home and we will fight for the three points.”
The match is scheduled for Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Civitas Metropolitano. The reverse fixture at the Olympic Stadium in December 2023 ended in a 1-0 victory for Barcelona, with João Félix—then on loan from Atlético—scoring the only goal.
Looking further ahead, Griezmann also confirmed his commitment to the French national team, aiming to be part of their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. “My goal is to continue at the highest level to be available for the national team for the upcoming World Cup,” he affirmed.
