Colombian winger Luis Diaz has expressed his complex emotions following Liverpool’s dramatic Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash with Real Madrid, which ended in a 5-2 defeat for the Reds at Anfield.
“We leave this match with very mixed feelings,” Diaz told reporters after the final whistle on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. “There is the joy of having played a great game, of having given everything on the pitch, and of scoring two goals. But there is also the sadness of the result, which was not what we wanted.”
The match narrative was a rollercoaster. Liverpool stormed into a 2-0 lead within the first 14 minutes, with goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. Diaz was instrumental in the early onslaught, providing a clever flick for Salah’s goal. However, a stunning Vinicius Junior brace before halftime leveled the score.
The second half saw Real Madrid take complete control. Eder Militao put the Spanish giants ahead in the 47th minute, before Karim Benzema struck twice to seal a commanding 5-2 victory for the reigning champions.
Despite the heavy loss, Diaz chose to focus on the positives ahead of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 15, 2023. “We know what we are capable of. This team has shown it can compete against anyone. We have to learn from today, correct the mistakes, and go to Madrid with the belief we can change the tie,” he stated.
The 26-year-old also took a moment to reflect on his personal journey, having missed a large part of the season due to a serious knee injury. “After so many months out, being back on this stage, in this atmosphere, and contributing to the team is a beautiful feeling. It gives me great motivation for what’s to come,” Diaz added.
With the Premier League title seemingly out of reach, Liverpool’s main focus for the remainder of the 2022/2023 season is now firmly on securing a top-four finish and mounting an improbable comeback in Europe.
