Caf official opposes Morocco hosting 2025 Afcon

In a surprising revelation, a senior Confederation of African Football (CAF) official has publicly stated his opposition to Morocco hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The official is Hani Taleb, the Vice President of CAF’s Appeals Committee. In an interview, Taleb confirmed his personal stance, saying, “I am against crowning Morocco as host of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.”

He elaborated on his position by pointing to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Taleb argued that Morocco, as a participant in that global tournament, should focus its efforts and resources there. “My personal opinion is that the country that will participate in the 2026 World Cup should direct all its efforts to prepare for the World Cup,” he stated.

Despite his personal view, Taleb acknowledged that the final decision rests with the CAF Executive Committee. He also made a prediction about who will officiate the opening match if the tournament proceeds in Morocco. “I expect that the opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco will be managed by a referee from the Ivory Coast,” he revealed.

The official’s comments introduce a notable dissenting voice within the continental body as preparations for the 2025 finals continue.
