motsepi leaves senegal for morocco after earthquake

South African striker Percy Tau has completed a surprise move from Senegalese club US Gorée to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, a transfer set in motion by the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco in September 2023.

The deal, confirmed on Tuesday, sees the 29-year-old forward leave Senegal after just one season to join the Botola Pro champions. Wydad moved swiftly to secure Tau’s signature following the tragic events, aiming to bolster their squad for the upcoming campaign.

“The earthquake was a horrific tragedy for Morocco,” Tau stated in his first comments since the transfer. “When Wydad’s offer came, it felt like an opportunity to be part of the nation’s recovery through sport. Joining a club of this stature is a huge challenge I am ready for.”

Tau arrived at US Gorée in the summer of 2023 and made an immediate impact, scoring 12 goals in all competitions. His performances were crucial in the club’s push for continental qualification, catching the eye of several North African sides.

However, Wydad’s project post-earthquake proved the most compelling. Club president Said Naciri emphasized the signing as a statement of intent. “In these difficult times, we must look forward. Percy Tau brings quality and experience. He is a player who can help us achieve our goals domestically and in the CAF Champions League,” Naciri said.

The transfer marks a significant step in Tau’s career, moving from a rising Senegalese side to one of Africa’s most decorated clubs. Wydad will be counting on his goal-scoring prowess as they defend their Moroccan title and target a deep run in Africa’s premier club competition in 2024.

For US Gorée, the departure of their star man is a blow, but the substantial fee involved provides resources to rebuild. Tau is expected to link up with his new Wydad teammates immediately as they prepare for the new season.
