Moroccan star rejects offers from Saudi clubs

Moroccan international midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has officially turned down lucrative offers from two prominent Saudi Arabian clubs, Al-Ittihad of Jeddah and Al-Qadisiyah, according to confirmed reports emerging on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.

The 27-year-old, whose stock rose significantly following impressive performances for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and a subsequent loan spell at Manchester United, was a prime target for the Saudi Pro League. Both clubs had presented substantial financial proposals to secure his signature for the upcoming season.

However, Amrabat has decided to continue his career in European football. His primary focus is now on securing a permanent move away from his parent club, Fiorentina, and finding a new challenge within one of Europe’s top leagues.

This decision represents a significant setback for the ambitious Saudi project, which had identified the Moroccan star as a key acquisition. Al-Ittihad, the reigning Saudi champions, and newly-promoted Al-Qadisiyah, backed by the Public Investment Fund, were both keen to bolster their squads with his combative midfield presence.

Amrabat’s rejection underscores a growing trend where players in their prime are prioritizing competitive European football over the financial incentives offered by the Saudi league. His attention now shifts entirely to the European transfer market as he seeks the right project for the next phase of his career.
