Valdano reveals the top candidate to coach Real Madrid

Jorge Valdano has named the coach he believes is the closest to taking over at Real Madrid — and it is neither Jose Mourinho nor Jurgen Klopp.

The former Real Madrid player, manager, and sporting director spoke about the club’s future on the bench. With Carlo Ancelotti’s contract running until 2026, speculation continues over who will lead the team next.

Valdano pointed to Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as the strongest candidate. The 42-year-old Spaniard is a former Real Madrid midfielder and has impressed since taking charge of the German side.

“Xabi Alonso is the closest name to coaching Real Madrid,” Valdano said in a recent interview. “He has the profile the club looks for. He knows the institution, the demands, and the pressure of the Bernabeu.”

Alonso led Leverkusen to a historic Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season without losing a single league game. His stock has risen sharply across Europe as a result.

Valdano dismissed the idea of Mourinho or Klopp taking over. “Mourinho had his time here. Klopp is a great coach, but I don’t see him at Madrid right now. Xabi is the natural fit,” he added.

Real Madrid have not made any official move yet. But Valdano’s comments reflect a growing belief inside and outside the club that Alonso is the man lined up for the job.

Ancelotti remains in charge for now. The Italian has delivered two Champions League titles in his second spell. But the club is already planning for life after him, and Alonso is at the top of the list.
