Discipline hits Ahly with severe penalties, ending Toni dance debate

The Saudi Football Federation’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee has handed down heavy sanctions against Al-Ahli, bringing an end to the controversy surrounding the celebration dance by their Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino, known as “Toni.”

The committee issued its official decision on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, fining the club 300,000 Saudi riyals. The ruling also included a one-match ban for Firmino and a fine of 50,000 riyals for his dance celebration during the team’s recent match.

The incident occurred during Al-Ahli’s clash with Al-Raed in the Saudi Pro League on February 8, 2024. Firmino scored a goal and performed a dance move that sparked widespread debate across social media platforms.

Many fans and analysts argued the celebration was provocative, while others defended it as a harmless expression of joy. The committee’s decision puts an end to the heated discussions, confirming that the dance violated the league’s disciplinary regulations.

Al-Ahli’s management has accepted the ruling and will not appeal. The club confirmed in a brief statement that it respects the committee’s authority and will ensure compliance with the imposed sanctions.

The fine of 300,000 riyals will be deducted from the club’s financial allocations from the league. Firmino will miss Al-Ahli’s next league fixture, a crucial match against Al-Shabab scheduled for February 17, 2024.

This is not the first time the Brazilian has faced disciplinary action in Saudi Arabia. Earlier this season, he was cautioned for excessive celebration after scoring against Al-Hilal in October 2023.

The committee’s strict stance sends a clear message about the league’s commitment to maintaining discipline and sportsmanship. Al-Ahli currently sits third in the Saudi Pro League table, fighting for a spot in next season’s AFC Champions League.
