New year’s goals for US men’s and women’s national teams

As 2024 unfolds, key figures and teams within U.S. soccer are setting ambitious goals ahead of critical upcoming competitions. Mauricio Pochettino, recently appointed head coach of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), has laid out his resolutions focusing on building a competitive squad capable of challenging at the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host.

Pochettino aims to integrate a strong mix of youth and experience, emphasizing tactical discipline and cohesion. “My goal is to create a team that can compete with the best in the world, especially on home soil in 2026,” he stated. This vision underlines the importance of developing young talent and ensuring consistency in performance through the upcoming qualifiers and tournaments.

On the women’s side, Emma Hayes, coach of Chelsea Women and a prominent figure in U.S. soccer circles, is targeting sustained success for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT). With the 2024 Olympics and the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, Hayes stresses the need for maintaining the team’s global dominance while promoting depth in the squad. Her experience in club and international football informs a dedication to tactical innovation and player development.

Christian Pulisic, one of the USMNT’s standout players, has also set personal resolutions for the new year. Coming off a challenging season with injuries, Pulisic is focused on regaining full fitness and consistently contributing at the highest level. He acknowledged the importance of staying mentally strong and physically prepared as the team builds toward major international tournaments.

Both USMNT and USWNT share the broader objective of not only competing but contending for titles on the global stage. The upcoming years are crucial for preparations ahead of landmark events hosted in the U.S., and these resolutions reflect a collective commitment to elevating American soccer’s standards.

In all, 2024 promises to be a pivotal year, with leadership, player development, and strategic planning at the forefront of efforts to realize success in 2026 and beyond.
