Hansi Flick has confirmed Barcelona are close to bringing Joao Cancelo back, saying it “makes more sense” for the club as they move towards a new deal for the Portuguese full-back.
Barca had been working on a different plan in the market, but Flick admitted that approach has now changed, with the focus turning to keeping Cancelo in the squad. The coach made it clear the club are moving in the direction of a return after the defender’s loan spell.
“I think it makes more sense,” Flick said, as he spoke about the situation and Barcelona’s thinking behind it.
The update is a major signal that Barcelona are on the verge of re-signing Cancelo, with Flick’s comments underlining that the club have effectively torn up their previous transfer plan to prioritise the full-back’s comeback.
Cancelo spent last season at Barcelona on loan, operating across both full-back roles, and his future has remained a key topic as the club shapes its squad ahead of the new campaign. Flick’s statement suggests the next step is close.
