Barcelona and Real Madrid have been warned against making a move for Harry Kane, with Michael Owen suggesting a transfer for the Bayern Munich striker would be “dead money”.
Kane left Tottenham in the summer of 2023 to join Bayern, and he has continued to score heavily in Germany. But with speculation never far away around elite forwards, his name has been mentioned in connection with possible future interest from Spain’s biggest clubs.
Owen, however, does not see a deal as a smart use of resources for either Barcelona or Madrid. The former England striker believes Kane’s age and profile mean he would not represent the kind of long-term value those clubs should be targeting, despite his proven record in front of goal.
Discussing Kane’s situation, Owen claimed the Bayern forward “gave away his aces too cheaply” earlier in his career, pointing to how long he stayed at Tottenham without winning a major trophy and how that shaped perceptions of his legacy.
Owen’s view is that, even though Kane remains one of the game’s most reliable finishers, sinking a major fee and wages into him now would not be the right move for clubs that need to think about rebuilds and future planning.
Kane remains under contract at Bayern Munich, where he continues to be a key figure, while Barcelona and Real Madrid have both been urged to look elsewhere rather than chase a deal that could quickly become “dead money”.
