Controversial referee appointed for Egypt vs Ivory Coast

Egyptian players celebrate during a match, wearing red jerseys with white shorts, showing team camaraderie on the pitch.

Egypt will meet Ivory Coast in a game loaded with old memories, after Moroccan referee Redouane Jiyed was appointed to take charge of the clash.

The matchup brings back one of the most talked-about moments between the two sides, when Egypt faced Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in 2006.

That night ended level at 0-0 after regular and extra time, before Egypt went through on penalties, winning 4-1 to book their place in the final.

The meeting is remembered for a major refereeing decision involving Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan. He was shown a red card, in an incident that sparked wide debate at the time.

The twist later came when Hassan revealed what he told the referee in that moment. He said: “I did not insult the referee, I only told him: ‘Fear God.’”

With Jiyed now assigned to officiate Egypt vs Ivory Coast, supporters on both sides will recall how tight and tense previous meetings have been, and how one whistle can shape the story of a knockout match.
