Manchester United have been handed a major boost ahead of the Manchester derby after Andre Onana’s Cameroon were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations, meaning the goalkeeper will return to Old Trafford in time for the clash with Manchester City.

Onana had travelled to AFCON after being granted permission to delay his departure and remain with United for domestic duty, but his tournament is now over following Cameroon’s exit.

The 27-year-old is therefore set to link back up with Erik ten Hag’s squad as preparations begin for the derby, with United relieved to have their first-choice goalkeeper available again.

Cameroon’s elimination also confirms Onana will not be away for the latter stages of the competition, removing the uncertainty over how long United might be without him at a key point in the season.

United’s focus now turns to getting Onana back into the group quickly, with the derby against City looming large on the calendar and points at a premium in the Premier League run-in.
