After 56 years, Marmoush revives painful Ivory Coast memory

Egypt forward Omar Marmoush brought back a painful memory for Ivory Coast, 56 years after one of the country’s most famous setbacks on the international stage.

Marmoush scored as Egypt beat Ivory Coast on penalties after a 0-0 draw, in the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on January 26, 2022.

The match went through 120 minutes without a goal, before Egypt held their nerve in the shootout to book a place in the quarter-finals.

That result echoed an old chapter from 1966, when Ivory Coast suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Egypt in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.

On that day, Egypt’s goals were scored by Hassan El-Shazly (two goals), Taha Ismail and Refaat El-Fanagar, while Joseph Siha got Ivory Coast’s only goal.

Ivory Coast ended the 1966 tournament in fourth place, missing out on bronze after a 4-2 loss to Ethiopia.
