Shay Given has apologised after making a crass remark involving the Holocaust while discussing Wilfried Nancy’s time at Celtic.
The former Newcastle and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper was speaking on air about Nancy’s spell at the Scottish club when he used the term “holocaust” in a way that drew immediate criticism.
Following the backlash, the broadcaster issued an apology, acknowledging the comment was inappropriate and making clear no offence was intended.
Nancy, who is now building his reputation as a coach, spent time at Celtic during his playing days. The remark from Given shifted attention away from the football discussion and towards the language used.
Given later apologised for his choice of words, as the incident prompted the official statement from the broadcaster.
