John Herdman has outlined his ambition to take Indonesia to the World Cup after being confirmed as the country’s new head coach, calling the job the start of a new era for the national team.
The Englishman, who previously led Canada’s men to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and guided the women’s team to Olympic bronze in 2012 and 2016, has been handed the task of pushing Indonesia to the next level as they chase a first-ever appearance at the finals.
Speaking after his appointment was announced, Herdman insisted he is ready for the demands that come with the role, embracing the scrutiny that follows football in the country.
“Pressure is a blessing,” Herdman said, as he set out his belief that Indonesia can grow into a team capable of competing on the biggest stage.
Herdman believes the scale of expectations can be turned into a positive, stressing that he wants to build a clear identity and a strong culture within the squad as Indonesia look ahead to the challenges of international competition.
He also made it clear that the long-term goal is not simply improvement, but qualification for the World Cup, as Indonesia aim to establish themselves among Asia’s leading nations.
The new coach arrives with a reputation for building organised, high-energy teams and delivering progress over time, and he will now try to apply that approach with Indonesia as they enter what he described as a fresh chapter.
Indonesia’s football federation will expect Herdman to bring structure and belief to the setup, with supporters hoping his experience on the world stage can help accelerate the team’s development.
