Victor Osimhen’s Africa Cup of Nations story remains one of frustration and unfinished business, with Nigeria once again falling short of the ultimate prize despite having one of the continent’s most feared strikers leading the line.
Osimhen arrived at the tournament carrying the weight of expectation. Nigeria, packed with talent and backed by huge support, looked capable of going all the way. But as the competition wore on, the Super Eagles’ campaign became as much about what they failed to do as what they achieved.
The striker had moments that underlined his quality – the movement, the aggression, the constant threat in behind – yet the defining goals and decisive contributions that separate good tournaments from great ones never truly arrived when Nigeria needed them most.
The problem was not limited to one player. Nigeria’s overall approach often invited pressure and made winning games harder than it needed to be. There were spells where the Super Eagles sat too deep, struggled to keep the ball, and relied on narrow margins to survive. In that kind of environment, even a forward of Osimhen’s calibre can end up feeding off scraps.
Still, Osimhen’s tournament also reflected the contradictions that have followed him throughout his career. For all his physical power and elite instincts, there were moments where his emotions threatened to boil over, adding needless tension to key games. It is a pattern that has hurt him before and continues to raise questions about whether he can consistently deliver at the highest level.
It is also now clear that Osimhen is trying to rebuild and refocus away from the spotlight of Europe’s biggest leagues, after his move to Galatasaray. That switch has offered him a fresh stage and a different kind of pressure, but the same issue remains: turning talent into a trophy-leading legacy.
Nigeria’s AFCON run ended with another missed opportunity, and for Osimhen it means another tournament where the promise outweighed the end product. The raw tools are undeniable, but at international level, time and patience are limited. The question is no longer whether he can dominate games – it is whether he can do it when the stakes are at their highest.
