Walker Zimmerman explains Toronto FC move and USMNT aim

Walker Zimmerman has set out his reasons for joining Toronto FC, insisting the move is part of a bigger plan that includes another push with the United States men’s national team toward the 2026 World Cup.

The veteran center back said he still has major goals in MLS and wants his legacy to be clear by the time he finishes. “I want to go down as the best defender in MLS history,” Zimmerman said, explaining that the challenge of a new club and a new environment played a key role in his decision.

Zimmerman also made it clear that the switch to Toronto was not a step away from international ambition. He believes he can compete at a high level in Canada’s biggest market and remain firmly in the USMNT picture, with the World Cup on home soil now the obvious target.

The defender spoke about the standards he expects from himself and the responsibility he feels to help lift Toronto FC, both on the field and in the dressing room. For Zimmerman, the move is about winning games, raising the level around him and building something with a club that expects more.

He added that personal drive remains a major force. The aim, he said, is to keep improving and to keep proving he can deliver at the top level in MLS while pushing to be part of the next American World Cup group.

Zimmerman’s message was direct: this is a new chapter, but the goals are the same — compete for trophies, lead from the back and stay in the fight for a place with the USMNT.
