A Moroccan member of parliament has sparked wide debate after making an unusual request regarding the referee for the Africa Cup of Nations final.
In a video shared on social media, the MP called for steps to be taken over the official appointed to take charge of the title match, questioning the choice and asking for a review of the decision.
The remarks quickly spread online, drawing mixed reactions from fans and observers, with many pointing out that referee appointments are handled by CAF through its own procedures and committees.
The video showed the MP insisting that the matter should not be treated lightly, arguing that refereeing decisions can influence the outcome of a final and that the referee’s selection must meet the highest standards.
The request was widely described as “strange” given the nature of the role of lawmakers and the fact that officiating appointments are normally outside political involvement.
The incident comes as attention builds around the AFCON final, with refereeing once again becoming a major talking point before the match is even played.
