Marc Guehi may have “felt let down” by Liverpool before choosing to join Manchester City instead, according to former Reds defender Stephen Warnock.
Warnock believes the timing of Liverpool’s interest could have worked against them, with Guehi potentially questioning why the club had not moved earlier when the chance to sign him first came up.
“Maybe he felt let down by Liverpool,” Warnock said. “Maybe he thought: ‘Why should I join you now? You could have had me before.’”
Guehi’s decision to head to the Etihad has been viewed as a major win for City, while Liverpool are left to look elsewhere despite later showing interest.
The situation also highlights how quickly top clubs can be punished in the market when they hesitate, with City stepping in and getting the deal done ahead of their rivals.
For Guehi, the move represents a big step, and Warnock’s comments suggest Liverpool’s earlier lack of action may have played a part in pushing him towards City.
