Comments from Egypt’s star player, Mostafa Mohamed, have ignited a wave of anger among Moroccan fans and media following the Pharaohs’ exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Galatasaray striker, in a post-match interview after Egypt’s painful last-16 defeat to DR Congo on penalties, made remarks that were perceived as dismissive towards the Moroccan national team. When asked about the tournament favorites after the host nation’s elimination, Mohamed stated, “Now, after the departure of Ivory Coast, the candidates for the title have become few, and I see that the favorite is Nigeria.”
His explicit omission of Morocco, the continent’s top-ranked side and a recent World Cup semi-finalist, did not go unnoticed. The comments quickly spread across social media platforms, with Moroccan fans expressing their fury and considering the statement a lack of respect for the Atlas Lions’ achievements and stature.
This incident adds a new layer of tension to the historic football rivalry between the two North African nations. The controversy emerges just weeks before a crucial head-to-head clash, as Egypt and Morocco are scheduled to meet in the quarter-finals of the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on February 2nd.
Further fueling the fire, a separate report has revealed that Mostafa Mohamed is currently at the center of a significant club-versus-country dispute. The Egyptian Football Association has officially announced that the player’s Turkish club, Galatasaray, has refused to release him for upcoming international duty. The EFA stated it has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the matter, seeking the global governing body’s intervention to secure the striker’s participation in the upcoming matches.
