Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez was forced into an extraordinary emergency goalkeeping role, but his heroics were not enough to prevent a late Barcelona winner in a dramatic 1-0 victory for the Catalans at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.
The pivotal moment arrived in the 38th minute. With Atletico’s starting goalkeeper Jan Oblak already substituted due to a head injury, and his replacement Ivo Grbic sent off for a foul on Robert Lewandowski, midfielder Saul donned the gloves. Facing Lewandowski from the penalty spot, Saul produced a stunning save to his right, clawing the ball away and keeping the score at 0-0 going into halftime.
Barcelona, however, finally found their breakthrough deep into the second half. In the 65th minute, a cross from Joao Felix was met by Lewandowski, whose header was saved by Saul. The rebound fell to Ilkay Gundogan, whose shot was blocked on the line by a combination of Saul and defender Cesar Azpilicueta. Following a lengthy VAR review, referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero awarded a penalty for a handball by Azpilicueta during the scramble.
Lewandowski stepped up again in the 68th minute. This time, he sent Saul the wrong way, firing into the bottom left corner to secure a crucial three points for Barcelona in the La Liga title race.
The match was not without further controversy. In stoppage time, Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo appeared to handle the ball in his own box while challenging Alvaro Morata. The VAR team checked the incident, but referee Montero decided not to award a second penalty, confirming Barcelona’s narrow victory.
The result sees Barcelona move into second place in La Liga, now eight points behind leaders Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, remain in fifth position.
