Barcelona have received a significant boost following their recent European disappointment, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) temporarily suspending their one-year ban from UEFA competitions.
The ban, initially imposed by UEFA in July 2023 for breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, threatened to exclude the Catalan giants from all European club competitions for the 2024/2025 season. This ruling came as a major blow to the club’s sporting and financial projections.
However, in a statement released on Friday, CAS confirmed the suspension of the ban pending a final decision on the club’s appeal. “The Court of Arbitration for Sport has granted FC Barcelona’s request for a stay of execution of the UEFA ban,” the statement read. This means Barcelona are cleared to participate in European competitions for the upcoming season while the full appeal is processed.
The club quickly welcomed the decision. “FC Barcelona expresses its satisfaction with the CAS decision to temporarily suspend the UEFA ban,” an official club statement said. “This allows our teams to compete in European competitions for the 2024/2025 season as the appeal process continues.”
The final verdict from CAS on the merits of Barcelona’s appeal is now expected in the first quarter of 2025. A ruling in the club’s favor would permanently overturn the ban. If the appeal is rejected, the one-year exclusion from European football would be enforced for the 2025/2026 season instead.
This development provides crucial breathing room for Barcelona’s new sporting project under President Joan Laporta. It ensures vital UEFA revenue streams remain intact for at least one more year, offering stability as the club continues its financial recovery plan.
