The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dealt a fresh blow to Morocco’s hopes of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations, in a move that runs against recent comments by CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
CAF has revealed that the process regarding the next AFCON host has not been settled yet, extending the wait for Morocco and the other candidates, despite earlier indications that a decision could be close.
The development comes after Motsepe had spoken publicly in a way that suggested clarity was near on the hosting file, but CAF’s latest position has pushed the timeline back and left the race open.
Morocco remains among the federations seeking to stage the tournament, but the latest update means the country will have to wait longer for an official outcome on its bid.
CAF’s stance underlines that any final announcement will only come through the confederation’s official channels once all procedures have been completed.
