Cole Palmer should make England World Cup squad despite fitness

Cole Palmer’s fitness should not decide whether he goes to the World Cup with England. The Chelsea forward has become too important, too effective and too reliable in the biggest moments to be left behind if he is not at 100 per cent.

Palmer has been Chelsea’s standout attacking player and their main source of goals and creativity, delivering game-changing quality week after week. His calmness in front of goal, sharp decision-making and ability to produce something from nothing have made him look like a “cheat code” at times, the kind of player opponents struggle to plan for.

That impact should carry serious weight for Gareth Southgate when he looks ahead to the tournament. England are not short of talent, but Palmer offers a different profile: a player who can drift inside, play between the lines, unlock deep blocks and finish under pressure. He can influence games from wide areas or centrally, and his end product has been among the best in the Premier League.

Even if Palmer is managing a knock or is short of match sharpness when squads are being discussed, his ability to change a match in a single action makes him worth taking. Tournament football often comes down to fine margins, moments and quick solutions. Few English attackers provide those answers as often as Palmer does.

England have seen how valuable it is to have players who can deliver decisive contributions off the bench, especially late in games when space opens up and teams tire. Palmer fits that role perfectly, but he has also shown he can handle the responsibility of starting and being the focal point.

It has also been revealed that Palmer will be on the cover of EA Sports FC 25 alongside Jude Bellingham, another sign of how quickly his profile has risen after his breakout at Chelsea.

For Southgate, the decision should be simple. Fitness will matter, as it always does, but Palmer’s form, effectiveness and mentality mean he should be on the plane for England regardless.
