Moroccan international midfielder Azzedine Ounahi has become a primary target for several major European clubs following his standout performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The 22-year-old’s displays for the Atlas Lions, who made history by reaching the semi-finals, have put him firmly on the radar of Europe’s elite.
According to a report from the French newspaper L’Équipe, Ounahi’s current club, Angers SCO, is now prepared to listen to offers for the player during the upcoming January transfer window. The report confirms that Angers’ management has decided to cash in on their rising star, with the club struggling at the bottom of Ligue 1.
Ounahi’s rise has been meteoric. Just over a year ago, in the summer of 2021, he was playing in the French third division with FC Avranches. His move to Angers propelled him into Ligue 1 and, subsequently, the Moroccan national team setup under coach Walid Regragui.
His technical quality, energy, and composure in the heart of midfield were hallmarks of Morocco’s incredible run in Qatar. This has translated to growing interest, with the L’Équipe report specifically naming Italian Serie A powerhouse Napoli as one of the keenest suitors. The club’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, is reportedly a strong admirer of the player’s talents.
With Angers open to negotiations and Ounahi’s profile at an all-time high, a major move in January 2023 appears increasingly likely for the midfielder who captivated the football world in winter 2022.
