Harry Kane missed a penalty for the first time in nine attempts on Wednesday night, but still scored twice as Bayern Munich booked their place in the Champions League last 16 with a 3-2 win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
Bayern started brightly and were handed a big early chance when they won a spot-kick. Kane stepped up, but his effort was saved, ending a perfect run from the spot that had stretched across his previous eight penalties.
The striker made amends soon after, finding the net to put the German champions in front. However, Union Saint-Gilloise refused to go away and hit back to keep the tie alive.
The match then swung again when Bayern were reduced to 10 men, leaving them with a difficult second-half task as Union pushed for a result that would keep their hopes alive.
Even a man down, Bayern kept their threat going in attack and Kane struck for a second time to complete his brace, restoring control at a key moment. Union responded once more to make it 3-2, setting up a tense finish as they threw everything forward.
Bayern held on through the closing stages to secure the victory and confirm their qualification for the Champions League knockout stages, with Kane’s two goals proving decisive despite his missed penalty.
