Chelsea are once again being linked with a striker who could soon be on the move, but there is a sense at Stamford Bridge that the club have already let the perfect moment slip away.

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike has climbed rapidly up the list of Europe’s most wanted attackers after an outstanding season in Germany. His form has put him on the radar of Arsenal and Liverpool, with both Premier League clubs monitoring his situation ahead of a possible summer deal.

Frankfurt are aware they may struggle to keep hold of the 21-year-old if a major offer arrives. The Bundesliga side are understood to value Ekitike at around €100 million, a figure that reflects both his production and the reality of today’s striker market.

Chelsea, however, had a clearer path to Ekitike not long ago. The France youth international was available for a far lower fee earlier in his career, when he was still developing and searching for stability after an uneven spell at Paris Saint-Germain. At that stage, a move to the Premier League was a realistic option, and Chelsea were among the clubs exploring the chance to bring him in.

Instead, Ekitike chose a route that has worked perfectly for him. Frankfurt offered him minutes, trust and a system that suits his strengths. He has repaid that backing by becoming one of the most dangerous young forwards in Europe, combining pace, sharp movement and improving finishing.

That jump in level has changed the conversation around his future. What once would have been a calculated gamble is now a major investment, and it is Arsenal and Liverpool who appear best placed to act. Arsenal are expected to look for a reliable goal scorer to raise their title chances, while Liverpool have also been assessing their options in attack as they plan for the next phase of their project.

For Chelsea, the situation is another reminder of how quickly the market can move. The club have spent heavily across the last few windows and remain open to adding another striker, but Ekitike’s price tag now makes him a far more complicated target than he would have been in previous summers.

Frankfurt, for their part, can afford to be patient. With a long contract and a player whose value is rising, they hold the leverage. If a bidding war begins, the German club will believe they can push the fee even higher.

Ekitike’s next steps are still uncertain, but interest from England is growing fast. And for Chelsea, it may feel like the latest case of watching a player develop elsewhere—only to become available again at a cost that is difficult to justify.
