How Senegal coach avoided World Cup ban despite CAF sanctions

Senegalese players, including Mane and Gueye, engage with their coach in a tense moment during a match, with Moroccan fans in the background.

Senegal head coach Aliou Cissé has managed to avoid a World Cup touchline ban despite disciplinary sanctions previously imposed on him by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The issue goes back to CAF’s decision to punish Cissé during Africa Cup of Nations competition, when he was hit with a suspension and a fine following incidents that drew the confederation’s disciplinary action.

However, the sanctions did not end up affecting his presence on the bench at the World Cup. The key point, as has been revealed, is that CAF penalties are applied within CAF competitions and do not automatically carry over to FIFA tournaments unless FIFA adopts and enforces them under its own regulations.

That distinction opened the door for Cissé to continue his work normally with Senegal during the World Cup, with the coaching staff unchanged on matchdays and no FIFA ruling issued to extend the CAF punishment into the global tournament.

As a result, Senegal were able to keep their head coach on the sidelines at the World Cup, even while the earlier CAF decision remained valid within African competitions.
