Olympique de Marseille’s preparations for their crucial Ligue 1 clash against Rennes have been dealt a significant blow, with head coach Jean-Louis Gasset revealing a new injury setback for striker Akor Adams.
The Nigerian forward, who joined Marseille from Montpellier in the last transfer window, was forced off the pitch during the team’s 2-0 victory over Le Havre last weekend. Initial concerns have now been confirmed, with the situation appearing more serious than first hoped.
“Akor Adams has suffered a relapse,” Gasset stated clearly in his pre-match press conference on Friday. “He felt a sharp pain in his hamstring. We thought it was a simple contracture, but an MRI scan has revealed a small lesion. He will be out for several weeks.”
This development is a major disappointment for both the player and the club. Adams had only just returned to the squad after recovering from a previous muscular issue that had sidelined him. His latest appearance against Le Havre was meant to mark his comeback, but it was cut short after just 13 minutes, leading to this new diagnosis.
The timing is far from ideal for Marseille as they push to secure European qualification. Adams’s absence further depletes Gasset’s attacking options ahead of the important match at the Orange Vélodrome. The coach must now find solutions from within his existing squad to compensate for the loss of the 24-year-old striker for the coming weeks.
