French superstar Kylian Mbappe was at the center of a major refereeing controversy during Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-1 draw with Rennes on Sunday, February 25, 2024. The incident, which saw Mbappe denied a penalty despite suffering a bloody facial injury, has sparked significant debate.
The flashpoint occurred in the 55th minute at the Parc des Princes. Mbappe, breaking into the Rennes penalty area, went to ground under a challenge from defender Arthur Theate. Replays showed clear contact from Theate’s arm to Mbappe’s face, which immediately began to bleed from the nose.
Referee Benoit Bastien waved away PSG’s vehement appeals and did not award a penalty. The decision stood even after a brief VAR check for a potential penalty and a possible red card for Theate. Play resumed with Mbappe receiving treatment for his injury on the sidelines.
The non-call has been heavily scrutinized. Renowned Egyptian refereeing expert, former FIFA referee Essam Abdel-Fattah, analyzed the incident for Kooora. He stated that, in his professional opinion, referee Bastien made the correct decision.
“The contact was not a foul,” Abdel-Fattah explained. “The defender was attempting to play the ball and his arm made contact with Mbappe’s face during a natural movement. The bleeding injury to Mbappe’s nose was an unfortunate outcome of this incidental contact, but it does not automatically constitute a penalty offense.”
Abdel-Fattah emphasized that the key factor was Theate’s intent and the nature of his action. “The defender’s arm was in a natural position for his movement as he challenged for the ball. He was not making a reckless or dangerous motion toward the opponent. Therefore, according to the Laws of the Game, a penalty should not be awarded.”
The match itself saw Rennes take a surprise lead through Amine Gouiri in the 33rd minute. PSG, struggling for fluency, needed an 97th-minute equalizer from Goncalo Ramos to salvage a point from the spot, after Mbappe himself had been substituted.
While the result leaves PSG clear at the top of Ligue 1, the discussion continues to focus on the pivotal moment involving their star forward. The official interpretation, as supported by expert analysis, is that not every instance of contact—even one resulting in injury—warrants a spot-kick, a nuance that decided this key moment in Paris.
