Kylian Mbappe’s stoppage-time penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw for Paris Saint-Germain against Newcastle United in a dramatic UEFA Champions League Group F clash on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. The late decision, awarded after a VAR review for a handball, sparked immediate controversy.
The match at the Parc des Princes seemed destined for a famous Newcastle victory after Alexander Isak put the visitors ahead in the 24th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. PSG, despite dominating possession, struggled to break down a resilient Magpies defense for the remainder of the game.
The pivotal moment arrived deep into added time. A cross from Ousmane Dembele struck the chest of Newcastle’s Tino Livramento and then brushed his elbow. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak did not initially point to the spot but was instructed by the VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After a lengthy review, Marciniak overturned his decision and awarded the penalty. Mbappe stepped up and coolly converted in the 98th minute to snatch a point for the French champions.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was furious with the call. “I feel it is a poor decision,” Howe stated post-match. “It was hugely frustrating for us as we were so close to a famous win. The ball hits his chest first, then his elbow which is down by his side. It’s not a deliberate handball. I don’t think it’s the right decision.”
The result leaves Group F incredibly tight. Borussia Dortmund top the group with 10 points after beating AC Milan 3-1. PSG are second with 7 points, while Newcastle sit third with 5 points and Milan are bottom with 5 points. All four teams can still qualify for the knockout stages heading into the final matchday on December 13, 2023.
When asked about the penalty decision, PSG boss Luis Enrique offered a terse response. “I have nothing to say about the penalty. You can draw your own conclusions. I am just a coach.”
The contentious finish ensures this dramatic group will go down to the wire, with PSG traveling to Dortmund and Newcastle hosting Milan in two weeks’ time.
