CAF President Patrice Motsepe has finally arrived in Senegal, touching down in Dakar on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. His visit comes 22 days after the Confederation of African Football’s controversial decision to order a replay of the Senegal vs. Ivory Coast World Cup qualifier.
The original match, played on June 6, 2023, ended in a 1-1 draw. However, CAF’s Disciplinary Board later ruled that the game must be replayed due to what it deemed improper conduct by the match referee. This ruling, announced on April 24, 2024, sparked significant tension and disappointment within Senegalese football circles.
Motsepe’s arrival was captured in a video showing him being greeted at the airport by Augustin Senghor, President of the Senegalese Football Federation. Reports indicate the atmosphere was strained, reflecting the lingering discontent over the replay decision. The visit is seen as a crucial diplomatic mission to ease tensions directly with Senegalese officials and stakeholders.
The CAF President’s schedule includes high-level meetings with Senegalese sports authorities. The core agenda is to address the fallout from the replay order and discuss its implications for the 2026 World Cup qualifying group, which contains Senegal, Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Gabon.
No official statements have been released yet regarding the outcomes of these talks. The football community is watching closely, as the resolution of this dispute is vital for the smooth continuation of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
