Motsepe hands AFCON trophy to Koulibaly

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has personally handed the Africa Cup of Nations trophy to Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, officially confirming the Teranga Lions as the true champions of the continent.

The presentation took place in a private ceremony, bringing a definitive end to the unusual circumstances that followed Senegal’s historic victory in Cameroon in 2022. After winning the final against Egypt, the trophy was initially presented to then-captain Sadio Mané. However, with Mané’s subsequent move to clubs in Europe, the physical cup remained with the Senegalese Football Federation.

Motsepe emphasized that the act was a formal recognition. “I have handed the cup to Koulibaly because he is the captain and leader of the Senegalese national team,” Motsepe stated. “Senegal are the true African champions, and this trophy rightfully belongs to them and their passionate fans.”

This gesture solidifies Senegal’s status and ensures the trophy is with its on-field leader. Koulibaly, who assumed the captaincy after Mané’s departure, now holds the symbol of Senegal’s first-ever AFCON triumph. The Confederation of African Football has now closed the chapter, with the cup officially in the hands of the reigning champions as they prepare to defend their title in 2026.
