CAF president Patrice Motsepe has issued his first official response after the Confederation of African Football announced sanctions linked to incidents surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Motsepe commented on the disciplinary measures that were handed down following the events that took place during and after the tournament decider, stressing that CAF’s priority remains protecting the image of African football and ensuring safety inside stadiums.

He underlined that the confederation is committed to applying its regulations, adding that CAF will continue to work with national federations and local organisers to prevent similar situations in the future and to guarantee that major matches are played in a secure and controlled atmosphere.

The CAF decisions were issued after a review of reports connected to the final, with the confederation moving to address what happened through official disciplinary channels.
