Paris Saint-Germain have taken a significant step towards the Champions League semi-finals after securing a 3-2 first-leg victory over Liverpool at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.
The home side started with incredible intensity, overwhelming Liverpool in the opening minutes. Their early pressure paid off in the 12th minute when Kylian Mbappé finished clinically from inside the box after a swift counter-attack, sending the Parisian crowd into a frenzy.
Liverpool, however, demonstrated their renowned resilience. They grew into the game and found an equalizer in the 28th minute. Mohamed Salah was the scorer, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma and silence the home supporters.
The match continued at a frantic pace, and PSG restored their lead just before halftime. In the 41st minute, Neymar Jr. produced a moment of magic, dancing past two defenders before unleashing a powerful strike that gave Alisson Becker no chance.
The second half saw Liverpool push forward in search of another equalizer, but PSG’s defense held firm under pressure. Instead, it was the French champions who extended their advantage. In the 68th minute, a well-worked team move was finished by Lionel Messi, who placed a precise shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.
Liverpool refused to surrender and set up a tense finale by pulling a goal back in the 83rd minute. Substitute Diogo Jota was the man on target, heading home from a corner to give the Reds a crucial away goal and a lifeline in the tie.
Despite late pressure from Jürgen Klopp’s side, PSG managed the remaining minutes professionally to seal a narrow but precious 3-2 win. The result gives Christophe Galtier’s team a slight edge heading into the decisive second leg at Anfield on April 10, 2024, though Liverpool’s two away goals ensure the semi-final place remains firmly in the balance.
