An MLS side is reportedly working on a move that would rank among the league’s most eye-catching signings of the winter. Vancouver Whitecaps FC are said to be in discussions over a deal for veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, the Mexico international whose World Cup performances have made him one of the tournament’s most memorable figures of the modern era.

The 38-year-old is currently playing in Italy with Salernitana, but his future has been a topic of speculation as the club battles at the bottom end of Serie A. Vancouver are believed to be exploring the framework of a transfer, with talks centered on bringing Ochoa to Canada ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

Ochoa remains a major name in international football, having represented Mexico at five World Cups and earning more than 140 caps. His reputation was built not only on longevity, but on delivering on the biggest stage—producing standout displays in multiple tournaments and repeatedly helping Mexico through tense group-stage matches.

For Vancouver, the appeal is obvious. The Whitecaps have been shaping their roster during the off-season and are understood to be looking for a proven No. 1 who can bring leadership to a back line and help in tight games. A goalkeeper with Ochoa’s experience would instantly add personality and presence to the squad, while also raising the club’s profile across North America.

Any move would still need to clear several hurdles, including contract terms and how a deal would fit within MLS roster rules. But the fact that Vancouver are said to be in active talks suggests the club is seriously considering the opportunity, rather than simply monitoring the situation from afar.

Ochoa has spent most of his club career in Europe, with spells in France, Spain and Belgium in addition to his time in Italy. Even at 38, he has continued to start at a high level, and his shot-stopping remains the main reason he is still attracting interest.

Vancouver’s transfer window has already included notable changes, and adding an established international would represent another ambitious step. Whether the negotiations lead to a completed deal remains to be seen, but the prospect of a World Cup icon arriving in MLS is now firmly on the table.
