Riyad Mahrez Begins Negotiations for European Return

Riyad Mahrez has entered into negotiations regarding a potential return to European football, according to exclusive information obtained by Kooora. The Algerian international’s future at Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli has become uncertain just one season after his high-profile move.

The 33-year-old winger’s representatives have initiated contact with several European clubs to explore the possibilities for the upcoming season. Mahrez is reportedly seeking a new challenge after a brief stint in the Saudi Pro League.

Mahrez joined Al-Ahli in the summer of 2023 from Manchester City for a transfer fee of €35 million, signing a contract until 2027. Despite a strong individual start where he contributed 11 goals and 10 assists, the team’s overall campaign fell short of expectations, failing to win any trophies and finishing a distant third in the league, 28 points behind champions Al-Hilal.

This perceived lack of competitive challenge is understood to be a primary driver behind Mahrez’s desire for a move. The player himself feels he still has the quality and motivation to perform at the highest level in Europe.

Al-Ahli’s management is aware of the player’s stance. While the club is not actively pushing to sell, they are prepared to listen to serious offers, particularly from European sides. Any transfer would require a significant fee to convince the Saudi club to part ways with their star so soon.

The coming weeks will be crucial as talks develop. Mahrez’s priority is a return to a major European league, with his track record in the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League making him an attractive option for clubs seeking proven quality.
