Gerard Pique has been formally sanctioned by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for misconduct during his final season as a professional player. The former Barcelona and Spain defender has been fined a total of €4,000 for two separate incidents that occurred in 2022.
The first sanction stems from comments made by Pique in April 2022. Following Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Cadiz at the Camp Nou, a result that severely impacted the club’s title hopes, Pique publicly criticized the officiating. The RFEF’s Competition Committee found his statements to have “discredited the image of the referees” and imposed a fine of €2,800.
The second fine relates to his conduct during a match in May 2022. In what was his last official game at the Camp Nou before retirement, Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Almeria, Pique was shown a yellow card for dissent. For this action, the Committee has issued an additional financial penalty of €1,200.
These sanctions conclude a disciplinary process that was initiated while Pique was still an active player. The RFEF’s decisions are now final, officially closing the case on these specific breaches of conduct.
