Thierry Henry Criticizes Koke's Red Card Decision

Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry has delivered a firm verdict on the controversial red card shown to Atlético Madrid captain Koke during their recent La Liga clash with Athletic Club, branding the decision “very harsh.”

The incident occurred in the 52nd minute of the match at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday, March 10. With the score level at 0-0, Koke was shown a straight red card by referee José Luis Munuera Montero for a challenge on Athletic Club’s Unai Gómez.

Replays showed Koke attempting to win the ball, making contact with Gómez’s foot. The decision proved pivotal, as Atlético, reduced to ten men, eventually lost the match 1-0 following a 64th-minute goal from Álex Berenguer.

Speaking on his analysis duties for CBS Sports, Henry did not hold back in his assessment. “For me, it’s very harsh,” stated the former striker. “I think he goes for the ball. Yes, there is contact, but for a red card? I’m not so sure. That moment completely changed the game.”

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone echoed the sentiment in his post-match press conference, confirming the club would appeal the suspension. “We believe it is an excessive punishment,” Simeone said. “We have already started the process to appeal the red card. The contact was minimal.”

The defeat deals a significant blow to Atlético’s hopes of a top-four finish, leaving them in fifth place as the race for Champions League qualification intensifies. The appeal to Spain’s Competition Committee is now awaited, with the outcome crucial for Koke’s availability in the coming fixtures.
