Virgil van Dijk hit out at the standard of officiating and questioned VAR after Liverpool were left frustrated by a key decision in their defeat at Bournemouth.

The Liverpool captain did not hide his anger after the match, insisting a refereeing mistake had a direct impact on the result and should have been corrected by video review. Van Dijk said the incident was “a big mistake” and made it clear he expected VAR to step in.

Liverpool were unable to recover as Bournemouth made their advantage count, leaving the visitors to reflect on a game shaped by fine margins and one major call.

Van Dijk’s comments added to the debate around consistency in Premier League officiating, with the Dutch defender pointing out that mistakes at this level are costly. He also called for higher standards and more accountability, stressing that teams cannot be punished by errors that can be checked.

The defender was particularly critical that VAR had not intervened, making it clear he believes the technology is there to prevent exactly this kind of situation.

Liverpool now turn their focus to their next fixture, but Van Dijk’s message was firm: refereeing standards and the use of VAR must improve after what he felt was a decisive mistake in the loss to Bournemouth.
