Wayne Rooney names two clubs for assistant manager role

Wayne Rooney claps and smiles, dressed in a black coat, against a blurred stadium background, highlighting his role in football management.

Wayne Rooney has named the two clubs he would consider joining as an assistant manager, with the Manchester United and England legend leaving the door open to a return to coaching.

Rooney has been out of work since leaving Birmingham City, but he has made it clear he is not ruling out another role in management. He has also revealed he would be willing to drop into a number two position under the right coach, rather than insisting on taking charge himself.

Asked about a possible next step, Rooney said he would look at working as an assistant at either Manchester United or Everton.

The 38-year-old is a club icon at both, having come through Everton’s academy before becoming United’s all-time leading scorer during a trophy-laden spell at Old Trafford. He later returned to Everton for a second stint as a player.

Rooney’s comments offer a clear hint at the type of project he would be open to, as he weighs up his next move in the game. He has already managed Derby County, D.C. United and Birmingham, but has indicated that taking an assistant role could be the right way back into the dugout.
