Raheem Sterling has completed a move to Feyenoord despite holding talks with Tottenham, with the key reason behind his decision now revealed.

The England winger explored his options earlier in the window and was in discussions with Spurs, but ultimately decided a switch to Rotterdam was the best fit for this stage of his career.

It has been revealed that Sterling was convinced by Feyenoord’s sporting plan and the promise of a central role, with regular minutes a major factor in his choice. The opportunity to be a leading figure in the side, rather than rotating, played a decisive part in him turning away from the Premier League approach.

Feyenoord’s pitch also focused on the club’s ambitions on the domestic and European stage, and Sterling was attracted by the chance to be part of a project where he would be relied upon from the start.

While Tottenham were keen and talks took place, Sterling’s priority was clarity over his role and the quickest route back to playing week in, week out. That is what Feyenoord offered, and he has now agreed the move.

Sterling will link up with his new team-mates ahead of the new campaign as Feyenoord look to push on at the top end of Dutch football, with the winger set to begin a fresh chapter in the Eredivisie.
