The winter transfer window has set a new record for the number of international moves, even though clubs spent less money than in 2015.

FIFA’s latest figures reveal that the January market produced an unprecedented volume of cross-border transfers, confirming a continued rise in player mobility during the mid-season period. The trend has accelerated in recent years as clubs look for quick solutions, cover for injuries and short-term reinforcements.

Despite this record activity, total spending did not follow the same path. The report shows that the overall amount paid in transfer fees remained below the levels reached in 2015, underlining a more cautious approach in the market.

The numbers highlight a window split between high turnover and tighter budgets, with many clubs opting for lower-cost deals rather than major investments. FIFA’s data confirms that the winter market is growing in volume, but not in the same way financially.
