Wrexham have been backed to follow Sunderland’s example as they chase another promotion, with the Welsh club continuing their rapid rise under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
The Red Dragons have already climbed through the divisions in quick time and are again being tipped to keep that momentum going. With a push for a place in the Championship picture developing, comparisons have been drawn with Sunderland, who have established themselves as one of the division’s standout sides after their own journey back up the ladder.
Speaking about Wrexham’s progress, former striker Dean Saunders insisted the club’s ambition should not be questioned and believes they can aim high if they keep building in the right way.
“Why not?” Saunders said. “Sunderland were in League One not long ago and they are flying in the Championship. Wrexham can do it.”
Saunders pointed to the upward trend at the club and the way the project has been run since Reynolds and McElhenney took over, with Wrexham growing on and off the pitch as they look to prove they can cope with higher levels.
While the Premier League remains the long-term dream, the immediate focus is on maintaining their promotion push and continuing the steady progress that has taken them from non-league football back into the EFL and towards the Championship conversation.
