Wrexham favourite James McClean has been backed to swap the pitch for the ring, with former Premier League striker Andy Johnson insisting the Irishman would take on anyone if he decided to launch a professional boxing career.
Johnson made the claim while speaking about McClean’s personality and fearless approach, suggesting the winger would not be short of confidence if he ever pursued a debut. “He’s mad, he’ll fight anyone!” Johnson said, as he talked up McClean’s willingness to take on any challenge that comes his way.
With celebrity boxing continuing to draw huge attention, Johnson even floated the idea of McClean facing one of the sport’s biggest crossover names such as Jake Paul or KSI, arguing that McClean’s attitude would not see him shy away from that level of opponent.
McClean, 34, has become a key figure at Wrexham and a popular presence with supporters, known as much for his edge and intensity as for his performances. The discussion around a possible future in boxing comes as the spotlight around high-profile bouts involving Paul and KSI continues to grow.
There has been no official announcement from McClean regarding a move into professional boxing, but Johnson’s comments have added to the conversation about what the Wrexham man could do away from football if he ever chose to pursue it.
