Klopp confirms Liverpool exit at season's end

Ronald Koeman refused to blame the referee for the controversial red card shown to Eduardo Camavinga during Real Madrid’s 3-2 victory over Almería in La Liga on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

The incident occurred in the 54th minute with the score at 1-1. Camavinga, already on a yellow card, was sent off for a second bookable offense following a challenge on Largie Ramazani. The decision sparked significant debate, as many felt the contact was minimal.

Despite playing with ten men for over 35 minutes, Real Madrid rallied to secure a dramatic win with goals from Dani Carvajal and a last-minute strike from Jude Bellingham.

In his post-match comments, Koeman, the Netherlands national team manager who was attending the match, offered a measured perspective. “I will not blame the referee for Camavinga’s sending off,” he stated. “It was a very harsh decision, certainly, but these moments are part of football. The important thing is that Madrid showed great character to win the match in such circumstances.”

Koeman’s focus remained on the resilience displayed by Carlo Ancelotti’s side. “Red cards can change everything, but Madrid handled the pressure perfectly. They found a way, and that is the mark of a strong team,” he added.

The result solidified Real Madrid’s position at the top of the La Liga table as they continue their pursuit of the 2023-2024 title.
