UEFA Opens Investigation into Bayern Munich After Real Madrid Clash

UEFA has officially opened a disciplinary investigation into Bayern Munich following the events of their Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid on May 8, 2024.

The case centers on the conduct of players and officials in the aftermath of the dramatic match at the Santiago Bernabéu. The governing body’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will examine the reported incidents, specifically citing “the throwing of objects” and “the lighting of fireworks” by Bayern supporters.

The clash, which saw Real Madrid secure a 2-1 victory to advance to the final 4-3 on aggregate, was marred by controversy in its dying moments. Bayern Munich’s players and staff were incensed after a late equalizer from Matthijs de Ligt was ruled out for an offside call against Noussair Mazraoui in the build-up.

The decision led to furious protests on the pitch, with several Bayern players surrounding the match officials. The tension spilled over into the tunnel area after the final whistle, requiring security intervention to separate the involved parties.

UEFA’s proceedings have been initiated based on reports from the referee, match delegate, and UEFA’s own ethics and disciplinary inspectors. The case will be dealt with in due course, with potential sanctions for the German club to be determined.

Real Madrid, who progressed to the final at Wembley on June 1, 2024, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, are not subject to any disciplinary action from this investigation.
