Chelsea suffers heavy defeat to Brighton in another collapse

Chelsea’s alarming slide continued on Friday night as they suffered a crushing defeat to Brighton, with the Blues producing another disjointed display that has left fans and pundits questioning the direction of the club.

The match at the Amex Stadium started disastrously for the visitors. Brighton took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes when Kaoru Mitoma capitalised on a defensive mix-up to slot home. The Seagulls doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark through a well-worked set piece, with Lewis Dunk heading in from a corner.

Chelsea’s response was feeble. Despite enjoying spells of possession, they created little of note in the final third. Brighton’s high press suffocated the visitors, forcing errors in dangerous areas. By the time the referee blew for half-time, the scoreline already looked ominous.

The second half brought no respite. Brighton added a third goal in the 54th minute when Evan Ferguson turned sharply inside the box and fired past Robert Sánchez. The home side continued to dominate, and a fourth goal arrived just after the hour mark through a stunning strike from Solly March that curled into the top corner.

Chelsea managed a consolation goal late on, but it did little to mask the scale of the problem. The defeat leaves the club languishing in mid-table, with their hopes of European qualification now hanging by a thread.

Manager Graham Potter, facing his former club, cut a frustrated figure on the touchline. Speaking after the match, he admitted: “We were not good enough tonight. Brighton were better in every department. We have to look at ourselves and find a way out of this.”

The result marks another low point in what has been a catastrophic season for Chelsea. With key players still sidelined through injury and a lack of cohesion evident across the pitch, the task ahead looks increasingly daunting. Brighton, by contrast, continue to impress under Roberto De Zerbi, cementing their place in the top half of the table with a performance full of energy and purpose.
