Dembélé follows Di María’s footsteps in Champions League

Ousmane Dembélé is walking in Ángel Di María’s footsteps in the UEFA Champions League this season. The Paris Saint-Germain winger has reached a remarkable milestone that only the Argentine had previously achieved in the competition’s history.

According to official UEFA statistics, Dembélé has now scored in six consecutive Champions League appearances. The last player to accomplish this feat was Di María, who did so during the 2018-2019 season while playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

The French international opened the scoring in PSG’s 3-0 victory over Brest in the first leg of the Champions League knockout phase play-offs on Tuesday night. That goal extended his scoring run to six straight matches in the tournament.

Dembélé’s streak began on matchday five of the league phase against Bayern Munich in November 2024. He then found the net against Salzburg, Manchester City, Stuttgart, and Brest in the league phase, before adding another goal against Brest in the play-off first leg.

The 27-year-old has been in devastating form for Luis Enrique’s side. His six-match scoring run includes goals against some of Europe’s top clubs, underlining his importance to PSG’s attacking threat.

Di María set the benchmark during the 2018-2019 campaign when he scored in six consecutive Champions League games for PSG. That run included goals against Red Star Belgrade, Napoli, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

Dembélé now has the chance to surpass Di María’s record if he scores in PSG’s next Champions League fixture. The second leg against Brest is scheduled for February 19, 2025, at the Parc des Princes.

PSG head coach Luis Enrique praised Dembélé’s consistency after the match. “Ousmane is showing his true level,” the Spanish coach said. “He is decisive in every game, and that is what we expect from a player of his quality.”

The Parisian club will be hoping Dembélé can maintain his scoring form as they look to progress deeper into the competition. PSG are strong favorites to advance past Brest and reach the round of 16.
