Xabi Alonso has played down the idea of a busy January for Real Madrid, insisting the club will only move in the winter window if the right opportunity appears. Speaking after his side’s latest match, the former Madrid midfielder said there has been no change to the plan and that the focus remains on getting the most out of the current squad.
Madrid have been linked with several names as injuries and a heavy schedule continue to test Carlo Ancelotti’s options. However, Alonso suggested that the club’s approach is unlikely to be reactive, even with the season entering a stretch where points and margins can quickly swing.
“In January, you always have to be attentive,” Alonso explained, “but it’s not about signing for the sake of it. The club has its ideas, and you work with what you have. If something comes that truly fits, then you consider it.”
Those comments reflect Madrid’s usual stance in mid-season windows. The Spanish giants have often preferred to wait for the summer to complete major business, particularly when their top targets are not available in January or when prices rise due to urgency.
Inside the Bernabéu, there is confidence that the squad can manage the coming weeks, especially with key players expected to return from injury. The coaching staff have also leaned on younger options when needed, a trend that has continued during this campaign.
Still, the rumor mill has not slowed. Madrid have been connected with defensive reinforcements and a potential short-term solution in central areas, though no deal is understood to be close. Alonso did not address any specific player, but he acknowledged the noise that surrounds a club of Madrid’s size whenever a window opens.
“There will always be talk,” he said. “That’s normal with Real Madrid. But the important thing is what happens day to day—training, recovery, the next match. Transfers are not something you can control from the outside.”
For now, Madrid’s stance appears clear: the club will keep monitoring the market, but there is no promise of arrivals. Any January addition would likely depend on a unique chance rather than a change of strategy, with Alonso signaling caution instead of urgency as the winter period approaches.
